“Dear Chess Western Province Parents, Players and Officials,

The CWP Youth Commission only received one nomination before the deadline of 19 January 2013.  Dr. Deon Mark Solomons has therefore been elected as Youth Director for 2013.

There will be a CWP Youth General meeting on Saturday 26th of January from 11:45 – 12:30. Therefore we have to schedule this meeting between the A-section rounds) Venue will be announced at tournament.

During this meeting Deon will plot the way forward and select the CWP Youth Commission for 2013. This is your chance as parents to become part of a dynamic team where you can make a difference. Please attend this meeting.

12 JAN 2013

2013 YOUTH DIRECTOR ELECTION

Dear Parents and Junior Chess Players

What a year for Chess Western Province! We had our fair share of victories during 2012. The most significant victories are the unification of the two unions in the region, 925 junior chess players to select a squad from and then sending 276 children with 27 coaches and managers to the SAJCC 2012. CWP received 16 medals during the SAJCC 2012. We received six out of the possible 7 medals in the Championship Section with three gold medals (u/10; u/12 and u/20), one silver medal (u/14) and two bronze medals (u/16 and u/18). We received 10 medals in the B Section. Two gold (u/12 and u/16 ); 3 silver (u/10; u/18 and u/20) and 3 bronze (u/14; u/18 and u/20) and two  4th and 5th place bronzes (u/8 and u/12). The biggest victory in my mind of all was Mohamed Bhawoodien opening the tournament with the Olympic oath for players and closing the tournament by lifting the u/20 Championship trophy. Indeed an epic show by CWP! To cap this level of success 74 players from CWP has been selected to play in the SAJCCC tournament in April 2013. This number represents 21% of all the players that will be playing at this prestigious tournament.

The CWP constitution requires that we have a yearly election for the position of Youth Director. Both our current Joint Youth Directors Andrew Fisher and Roland Willenberg will not be standing for this position in 2013. Submission of nominations will close on the 19th of January 2013 and election will be held during the 3rd round of the Cape of Good Hope Chess Tournament. Andrew Fisher will be the election officer for this election as decided at a CWP Exco meeting on the 8th of January 2013.  All nominations must be forwarded to youth@chessa.co.za.

Some characteristics of the ideal candidate:

• The person must have a very strong organization management background.

• The person must have the ability to effectively address queries from parent, players and officials.

• The person must have a passion for chess and excellence.

• The person must have the ability to compile a communication plan and execute on the communications plan.

• The person must be a strategic thinker who can translate the strategy into an operational plan and execute the plan.

• The person must have the ability to relate to the juniors and their parents.

• The person must be proud of CWP and they must be able to relate with other Youth Directors of other regions.

• The person must undertake to sustain the CWP Junior traditions.

Summary of constitution:

“6.4. Individual chess players who are under age 20 on 1 January each year shall elect the Director of Youth Chess for that calendar year. The election shall take place at the first CWP tournament in that calendar year, or as soon as practicable thereafter. Individual chess players under age 18 at the date of the election shall be represented by one of their parents or by their guardian in such election. No vote shall be accorded to any individual chess player who at the date of the election is in arrears in respect of the annual CWP affiliation fee. The protocols pertaining to the annual election of the Director of Youth Chess shall be determined by the Executive and shall be set out in writing and e-mailed to all CWP members at least one week before the election date. The elected Director of Youth Chess will in turn represent the youth constituency for the purposes of CWP voting rights during that calendar year (and also for the period until the next Director of Youth Chess election for the ensuing year) and shall also represent CWP in all dealings with the CHESSA Youth Commission.”

Election procedures and names of the nominees will be published on the 20th of January 2013

Regards

Andrew Fisher

Joint Youth Director
